The leader's role is to take responsibility for the safety and behaviour of the group, as well as trying to make sure everyone enjoys themselves. As such, a leader should preferably have done the walk before. They should have a good understanding of the safety issues arising from the walk, and impart this to the group. The leader must have the skills to deal with a wide range of situations, and should be able to plan and organise the entire walk including transport, navigation, identification of hazards (including noticing hypothermia), direction and "leadership" of the group in the bush, looking out for each member (knowing where they are, for starters) and minimising the environmental impact of the group.
You should study far more widely than the information in this website if you are going to take other people into the bush. Check our book list for a start.Top
